Interview with Bill Doern “Focus on a Destination”​

On 28th February 2022, I had my first PRofessionals & Coffee interview with Bill Doern, the President & Chief Imagineering Officer of Anamorphiq. It was an insightful and intriguing experience to meet a professional like him and learn about his work experiences.

He rightly explained how “volunteerism is essential in every business, not strictly communications.” Bill said, “It keeps you connected to your values and how you think about people in different life situations. Volunteering helps us connect with our Emotional Intelligence, and it is an important skill to develop.”

As a public relations student, I was able to gain a lot from his responses and advice. Towards the aspect of networking, he advised, “Stay at it.” He explained how he had one student who regularly followed up with him to stay connected. I understood the importance of consistency and clarity when we connect with someone. As he explained, we should always know what we are expecting and communicate it. “Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone. Sometimes a good phone call will do the trick.”

He firmly believes in doing what we love, and that is how we stay motivated to work. I liked how he explained that we push ourselves better if we find joy in our work. “Motivation comes from the joy of doing something that you like.” Bill’s responses threw light on how passionate and solution-focused he is. I believe these things are essential for young practitioners like me to adapt to a solution-focused approach.

It was amazing to know how starting his own business was the most engaging part of his career journey. He described well that no job is insignificant and people should keep their options open. Bill’s positive and objective approach towards job finding demonstrates how young people should consider all their options and understand when it is the time to move on from a job.

All in all, I am glad to meet a highly-spirited and ardent professional and entrepreneur like him. It was a pleasure to connect with him over PRofessionals & Coffee and attain a deeper knowledge of his work life.
