Juggling PR Hats: Corporate Affairs Vs. Public Affairs

Your future is in your hands… delve into the right path with the right set of skills, and determine your strong suits and subtle capabilities for each medium.

As a newly graduated student, quite fresh out of the oven from the School of Public Relations and Communications, awaiting my incipient PR journey, I have a couple of learnings to share with students embarking on their budding careers in the realm of communications.

Often, it gets a bit overwhelming to tread a path forward into the multi-faceted aspects of Public Relations. If you find yourself at a crossroads, ask yourself whether you are interested in resolving issues with on-foot thinking, prompt responses, exceptional media relations skills or are you more confident in curating strategic PR campaigns from scratch. Are you adept at writing and particularly presenting your case and ensuring smooth communication within official governmental corporations?

Now, to offer a peek into the governmental organization’s daily fundamental PR tasks, I have some valuable perspectives from Matteo Guinci, Manager of Issues Management and Crisis Communications at the Government of Canada. Guinci presented his daily work routine, which starts from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., where he develops issues management plans through crucial messaging and communication for the cabinet, analyzing trends and measuring impact through active social listening and updates from the press and social media. One prominent thing that struck me especially was to “always document the key findings and develop a repository to collect data from media calls and story responses.”

In a guest lecture with Jordan Berman, VP of Global Corporate Affairs at Apotex Inc. had a cognizant approach when it boils down to handling a global crisis, such as the Opioid Epidemic of the early 2000s, as he was in charge of communications at Purdue Pharma.

As it was a massive crisis to navigate, it took years to refurbish the image of Purdue Pharma, and it is still one of the prominent case studies for crisis management in the pharmaceutical sector.

Whether Crisis Communications and Issues Management or Internal Communication and Change Management, choosing your most appropriate fit comes down to analyzing your best attributes and coalescing them to suit the required skills for the role.
